The Drop CTRL is a tenkeyless (TKL) aluminum keyboard with per-key and underglow RGB, a sturdy aluminum frame, and hot-swap PCB. It's consistently one of the most popular keyboards at its price point. Like most enthusiast boards, it ships without keycaps — here's what you'll want to get.
What ships in the box
The Drop CTRL ships with the aluminum case, PCB, and your choice of switch type (Halo Clear, Holy Panda, Gateron options depending on the version). No keycaps are included.
Keycap compatibility
The CTRL uses a standard TKL layout. Virtually every TKL-compatible keycap set works. The bottom row is standard (6.25u spacebar), so no unusual keycap sizes are needed. TKL layouts have the widest keycap set compatibility of any keyboard form factor — this is one of its advantages.
Sound and feel modifications
The Drop CTRL has a firm, plate-mounted typing feel. To soften it, adding a foam layer between the PCB and case is a popular modification. This is often called a 'case foam mod' or 'PE foam mod' and requires cutting a sheet of foam to size. It reduces the high-pitched 'clack' and makes the keyboard sound fuller and more rounded.
RGB and software
The CTRL uses the QMK firmware and VIA for full customization. The per-key RGB is vibrant and configurable via VIA without needing to flash new firmware. The underglow is a nice touch that most desks benefit from. One limitation: the CTRL doesn't have wireless capability — it's wired only.

How do I make the Drop CTRL quieter?
The CTRL's plate-mounted PCB makes it firmer and louder than gasket-mount boards. The most effective noise reduction mod is adding case foam between the PCB and the bottom case — cut craft foam or thin neoprene to fit the interior. Lubing switches and stabilizers provides the second largest sound improvement. O-rings on switch stems reduce bottom-out noise slightly but also affect feel.
Does the Drop CTRL need software to configure?
No additional software installation is required for basic use. The CTRL runs QMK firmware and is VIA compatible — you can remap keys in real time using the VIA web app in Chrome without downloading anything. For deeper firmware changes, QMK Toolbox is free and well-documented.
What switches come with the Drop CTRL?
Drop offers the CTRL with several switch options at purchase, including Halo Clear, Holy Panda X, Gateron optical switches, and sometimes Cherry MX variants. Availability changes by listing. The PCB is hot-swap compatible, so you can swap to any MX-compatible 3-pin or 5-pin switch after purchase without soldering.
Pro tip
The Drop CTRL's plate-mounted design means the typing feel is firmer than gasket-mount boards. If you want a softer feel, look for Shore 40A durometer o-rings that fit MX-compatible switches — they absorb some of the impact on keypress and soften the bottom-out sound without altering the actuation feel.
